My main feeling about the result of this assignment is that I feel that it needs more ‘frames’ between the ones that I have created. The death of the soldier in, particular, needs something of the soldier himself rather than just the shot of the machine gun. The original concept was for eight images, including two to end the sequence. They would be of the grand-daughter finding a case after her grandmother’s death, then opening the case to find the original letters and handkerchief. I have not been able to shoot these, but it might be possible to add them prior to assessment. Continue reading Reflections on ‘Making it up’

I had several ideas for this assignment, mainly based around the exercises I had done earlier in the course.
My first idea related back to the alternative scenario that I imagined for Assignment Two: Using props.
This involved the idea of a handkerchief being given to a soldier as a memento of his lover as he went to war. The soldier dies on the battlefield and the handkerchief is returned to his lover after his death. The handkerchief is then found many years later by the soldier’s granddaughter.
This idea I had put on hold, due to lack of models and costumes, so initially I decided to re-shoot my photograph for Childhood Memory and make it look like a genuine old photograph. Having created the new image, I was about to submit it as assignment five, but I was not totally happy that it was enough. Continue reading Assignment 5 – Making it up

For this assignment I have chosen a photograph taken by my father. This is just one of the photographs in an album which I found in my mother’s house after she died. Unfortunately my father died when I was still a teenager, so there is nobody alive now who could offer any first hand information on the content of these photographs. Reflections on Assignment 3 – Diary
My partner says that I am too literal in my interpretation of my assignments. She may well be right as I have always had a scientific training rather than an arts based eduction. This made me wonder whether I was doing the right thing by simply photographing a minor event from my diary. This was compounded by the praise given to Blas Gonzales’ excellent video in the weekly bulletin. Keep a diary for a set period of time (at least two weeks). Each day write two or three pages about yourself – what you’ve been doing/thinking. This can be as specific or poetic as you wish. You may wish to pick a theme for the duration. This is an open brief designed to give you freedom to create something personal which suits you best. Use the artists you’ve looked at in Part Three or your own research for inspiration.
Select the most interesting parts of the diary (which could also be the most banal or mundane) and interpret them into a photographic project.
In preparation for assignment three, I have kept an online diary ever since I started the course. Start by doing some reflecting in your learning log. What kinds of subjects might be seen as un-photographable? How might you go about portraying them using photography? List a few examples of things you’re experiencing now or have recently been thinking about. This doesn’t have to be too in-depth or revealing, but it can be if you want. Equally, it might be something as apparently trivial as how you’re going to fit everything into your busy day. At first you may come up with literal examples, but the more you think about them the more those ideas will develop into specific and more original ones.
Make a list of at least seven ideas. Try and keep to things you have a personal interest in or curiosity about. Keep a notebook with you at all times and make notes when ideas strike you as interesting. (This is good practice for all stages of the degree and beyond. Ideas books are something to be revisited time and again for ideas and hints for the photographer you’re becoming.)
Now implement one of your ideas. Aim for a tightly edited and visually consistent series of 7–10 images. Continue reading Assignment 2 – Photographing the unseen
I think the most difficult thing to photograph is probably other peoples perceptions of the world.
We think that when we look at an item we all see the same thing, but this is by no means true. Firstly our colour perception may be totally different, different people like different colours, so do they look completely different? What if one person is colour blind?
We can try and create images which confuse the colours to simulate the effect, but the differences in what people see may be far greater. Some people have hallucinations, and see things which are not there, or cannot see things that are there. Continue reading Introduction to Assignment 2

The aim of the assignment is to help you explore the convincing nature of documentary, even though what the viewer thinks they see may not, in fact, be true.
