I have just obtained permission to exhibit my photographs in the King’s Lynn Customs House. King’s Lynn is the major port of the Fens, so it is a very appropriate place for me to hold my exhibition of images of the Fens. The exhibition is due to take place from 17th to 24th May 2025.
The Custom House is a grade 1 listed building built by Sir John Turner in 1683 and designed by architect Henry Bell. It sits on the quayside at King’s Lynn and was used by H M Customs and Excise until 1989. Since then, it has been used as a visitor centre and, more recently, as an art gallery. Originally, only the first floor was used by Customs, with the ground floor used by market traders until 1742, when the open arcade was enclosed.
The local council has future plans to restore the building to its original form with an open ground floor, however I believe that it is unlikely this project will begin before my exhibition.
